Biodegradable or non-biodegradable, throwing garbage around is littering. And the environment is adversely affected by it. An island the size of France has formed of floating rubbish in the Pacific Ocean; thousands of miles of beaches have become unexpected landfills. Rubbish has become part a regular element of rivers, fields, forests and even mountains. Littering on the ground is the same as littering into the sea and vice-versa.
Dissolved toxic impurities have become part of the staple diet of many animals, which in turn can be transferred to humans when we eat these animals.
The soil and plants also suffer the effects of the slow decomposition of these materials.
Places that were once beautiful are now littered with garbage. |

Cigarette butts, snack wrappers, take-away food containers, bottles, cans and plastics are the most commonly littered items but also hazardous waste such as batteries (commonly household batteries), tires and paint.
For each cigarette butt 60 liters of water are contaminated. Like hazardous waste, each discarded butt leach toxic elements such as cadmium, lead and arsenic, poisoning into our soil, waterways and groundwater.
In an endless sea of people, one might feel as though thier role is insignificant and believe it is impossible to make a difference single handily. However, Clean the Earth Project wants to combat those feelings of helplessness.
While the act is solo, we are all in this together and are powerful in numbers. Earth is our home and it is everyone's responsibility to keep it clean. |

| Other projects |
Clean the Earth has on its immediate agenda the implementation of several projects, including the creation of a large network of collaborating youth hostels throughout the world to encourage backpackers to participate in those countries most affected. We are working on a project to deliver organic bags at the entrance of natural parks/reserves to encourage people to participate in rubbish collecting.
This is just the beginning of a long list of ideas that we would love you to get involved in.
The health of our environment, of other animals and ours is at stake... our hopes are that for every person who carelessly litters, there will be another person behind them to correct their wrong.
